The Annual Health Check Your Home Needs Before Winter

Tuesday, September 1, 2020

Winter tends to be the time of year that our home suffers the most wear, tear, and exposure to the elements. It’s also the time of year we expect to spend the most time in that home. As such, it’s important to make sure that it’s fit to do its job. Here, we’re going to look at a few of the health checks you should arrange for your home as the weather changes, and why they’re crucial in protecting your health.

The Roof

It’s going to be raining a lot more, meaning that a good roof over your head is crucial. Look for local roofing contractors who can climb up there and take a look to see if any tiles are damaged or missing. Otherwise, these roofing issues can let leaks into the home freely. Leaks can also be caused by clogged up guttering, so now is the perfect time to year to make sure it’s healthy and clear.

You’re a lot more likely to rely on your heating systems more in the winter than any other time of year. However, both overuse and disuse can cause them to decrease in efficiency over time. As such, it’s recommended that you get an HVAC technician to come out and take a look at the systems if you think they’re not working as effectively as they should be. If you use radiators, you should bleed them before the winter sets in, as well.

The Garden

As well as ensuring that your home is in good condition, it’s worth taking a look outside, as well. An overgrown garden can become a real issue in the latter months of the year, as it can give cover for pests trying to make their way into the home. Overgrown bushes and trees can cause more debris that gets whipped up by the air, too, potentially clogging gutters and damaging roof tiles.

The Driveway

Another exterior issue worth taking a closer look at is your driveway, walkway, patio tiles, and basically any other exterior structure you might stand on. If these are dirty, they can become a real slip and trip hazard when it starts to rain. A good pressure washing can help restore them and make your footing a little more stable. You don’t want that risk on your head when you’re welcoming guests for the holidays.

The Insulation

How well your home is able to retain its heat through winter will make a huge difference to you and your family. Insulation specialists can check to make sure that no issues like moisture have caused major damage to existing insulation. Depending on where you live, you might even be able to get a free insulation installation if you don’t currently have any. Don’t neglect to inspect insulation for your plumbing, either, as frozen pipes can lead to a lot of expensive water damage.

Just like us, our home needs occasional physical. The above suggestions are just the start, you should take the time to look through it for any other issues worth noting.
