Save Money With These Home Improvement Ideas

Saturday, June 6, 2020

Being a homeowner is great, but one of the biggest bugbears for many is the expense. Those utility bills all add up, and they can leave us with less money for some of the things we might enjoy in life.

However, despite the initial expense of a home improvement project, it is possible to make long-term savings at home if you decide to go through with something.

Here are just a few ideas, so have a look, and roll your sleeves up if you have the DIY knowhow, or get in touch with the relevant professionals if that is the safest option for you.

#1: Caulk and weather-strip your home
If your home is a little on the chilly side, you might be tempted to crank up the heating on a too-regular basis. However, your attempts to warm up your home could be for nought, as the heat could be disappearing through the cracks in your doors and windows. So, replace any worn-out weather stripping with something new, as you will be able to keep out those pesky drafts if you do. And use caulk to fill in any nuisance gaps that exist around your home.

Check out this beginner's guide to weatherstripping if you are in any way unsure.

#2: Install energy-efficient lighting around your home
Fluorescent and incandescent lighting types are on the way out now, as many people are turning to LED lights to light up their homes. Being both cost-effective and energy-efficient, you will save money and do your bit to save the planet if you make the switch, so consider lighting upgrades if you haven't already done so.

This can be as simple as buying a few new bulbs from the store, but bearing in mind that you might need to replace your light fittings too, you might want to call out an electrician if the job becomes a little more complicated than simply screwing in a light bulb.

#3: Insulate your attic
Another reason why our homes are not always as warm as they should be is the attic. Heat rises, and if your attic isn't insulated, you will lose a lot of your heating through the roof. So, if you have the know-how, consider an attic insulation, as you will eventually save a lot of money this way. It's a little more complicated than simply adding spray foam or fibreglass, of course, as there might be work needed to prepare your attic for insulation first.

To give you an idea of the scope of the job, and to do it properly without any shortcuts, check out this attic insulation guide. Then have a go yourself if you think you have what it takes, or contact a professional if you think it safer to do so.

There are all kinds of other home improvement projects you could embark on, of course, but for the sake of your energy bills, the ideas we have suggested here might be your focus if you're looking to save money.
