Hazards around the Home and How to Keep Your Family Safe

If you have kids then you will know how hard it can be to keep an eye on them. At times you may feel as though you can’t turn your attention away for more than 5 minutes without worrying about where they are or what they are up to. For this reason, you have to make sure that you minimize the number of hazards around the home.

Falls
It doesn’t matter whether they slip on a wet floor or whether they fall down the stairs, because injuries due to falls are one of the most common hazards around the house. If you want to minimize the risk, then you need to make sure that all staircases have a solid handrail. You also have to make sure that you have adequate lighting, and that you install safety gates where necessary. You can also put secure rugs in the bathroom to make sure that water doesn’t pool and cause a slippery hazard.

Choking Hazards
Choking can be scary, to say the least. The biggest risks for this around your home include small toys and even hard foods. You need to look around and inspect toys that may have loose parts. It also helps to scour floors to see if anything might have rolled underneath the sofa. Small hard foods such as nuts or even candy should be kept out of reach as well, as this can also be a choking hazard.

Sharp Objects
It’s really not hard to see the danger that sharp objects possess. There are a huge number of sharp objects around the home, and this includes knives and even graters. It helps to make sure that these are out of reach where possible. In the yard, rakes and saws can also pose as a hazard. When you are finished with tools, it is so important that you clean up after yourself and that you leave them locked away when they are not in use.

Paints
Even paint that is not lead-based needs to be stored properly. You also need to keep it out of reach of your kids. If you need to store paint then never put it in any other container, other than what it came in. Your child may mistake it for something else and you may end up with a very scary situation on your hands. Chemicals such as household cleaners also need to be locked away. It is very easy for kids to become enticed by brightly colored bottles, and accidents happen far more than you realize.

Air Conditioning
If you do not clean out your air conditioning unit on a regular basis then this could pose as a hazard to you and the kids. If your unit is in need of a repair then contact an emergency air conditioning repair service, and also make sure that you clean out the filter on a regular basis. When you do this, you can stop dust from building up and you can also stop allergens from being spread throughout your home.
