Life Skills You Should Teach Your Kids

There is a selection of skills that we should take the time to teach our kids. There was a lot of talks recently that young people are currently lacking the ability to make something as simple as scrambled eggs, and so there has been a microwaveable pouch of eggs put on sale. And, while it is brilliant that we can cater for those who perhaps haven’t been fortunate enough to learn. When there are a couple of skills that we should take care of as early as possible.

Sink or Swim
It might be tempting to wait until your kids are in school and letting them deal with teaching your little ones, but really you should be looking at kids swimming lessons as early as possible. Not only will this mean you can relax a bit more when it comes to family holidays, but it means that nothing at an all-inclusive holiday park will be off limits to your child. It also means that when it comes to graded lessons, physical education and even joining school teams, your child will have a few years of swimming lessons under their belt.

In The Kitchen
Getting your children in the kitchen is similar to swimming. It should be tackled as early as possible. Teaching your children, or child, to make simple meals like pasta, scrambled eggs and toast, sandwiches, simple breakfasts and more. You should start this early on. Making pancakes and baking with them as young as 2 years old and continue it on, gradually getting more complicated as they get older. This is a life skill that will serve them well, after all, you never know what the future may bring. You might even have a budding chef on your hands!

Clean Machine
Often times it is tempting for parents to take care of all the chores. But, that means when your once small children head out into the world alone, they are going to have to learn to maintain a home and find time for everything else. If you implement a chore system, (you can pay pocket money if you want to), then they will learn how to balance fun, homework, school, chores and their clubs too. Here is an excellent list of basics:

  • Wash dishes by hand
  • Load / unload the dishwasher
  • Learn basics of laundry- hanging clothing to dry / symbols and temperatures
  • Keeping bedroom tidy
  • Making beds
  • Changing bed sheets
  • Laying the table / cleaning the table down
  • Hoovering or sweeping

There are of course many other chores, and it will depend on your household as the best way to manage this.

Internet Safety
It is easy to take this one for granted with so many parental controls on computers and mobile phones, but the truth is you need to keep talking and being open about using the internet. Keep screens facing the room when being used, download apps that show family locations, and frequently ask what they’ve been up to on the internet. You might like to implement set internet usage times or a no history deletion policy. You can read more about internet safety here

I hope you find these tips on what skills you should teach your kids helpful!
