For those of us who have been blessed to have a family or friends to cook for, we know that being ordained the “designated food preparer” is a blessing, but at times can feel like a curse. Some things take a lot of time to prepare, mess them up, and there is no way to start over and nail it. There are times when meal-deadlines can create the most stressful of cooking moments. This is especially true when the extended family will be around, such as holiday meals. It is also during these times that we feel extra compelled to bake something. After all, nothing concludes a festive holiday meal quite like a beautifully decorated pan of cookies that are themed to go with that holiday! However, we have all seen and experienced enough cooking to know that baking is the hardest thing to pull off when there is no time for mistakes. Well, I am happy to share with you a great book, which is more of a resource to guide you through the process of baking something yummy that not only will your guests be happy to enjoy, but that you will be proud to present.

‘A Cookie to Celebrate’ is an excellent guide to “Recipes and Decorating for Everyday Baking and Holidays”. From the moment you see the cover, you have a general idea of how the book is going to be presented throughout. The book is great, not quite a cookbook, not quite instructional, think of a field-guide that covers doing something down to suggesting techniques that you seldom see in a book containing recipes. There are beautiful illustrations throughout and the chapters are self-explanatory, allowing you to easily find what you are looking for, or know what you are heading into. Mechanically, this book scores a perfect mark from me. It accomplishes the author’s intended purpose effortlessly. It is functionally efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

As far as I am concerned a part of the book that deserves to be highlighted is the writing. I have never seen such clean and enjoyable writing in a recipe book of any kind. The combination of the author’s encouraging notes and overall theme of the book make you giddy to cook with this book by your side. I felt like a child as I followed along with the instructions and the whole experience was much better than I have had while baking in the past. Hats off to Jana Douglas. As the creator of this guide and founder of Jana Lee’s Bake Shop, her passion for baking are evident and her techniques are proven. Pick up this book and bake those cookies you have dreamed about. And don’t forget that when you are done, have a cookie to celebrate yourself!
