Review: Bigfoot and Alien ~ Mysterious Monsters Book One & Book Two Kids Books

Author David Michael Slater knows a lot about kids. He's an acclaimed author of books for kids and teenagers, a middle school teacher, and a dad. Not to mention an author of practical books about education.

His new Mysterious Monsters series for early readers is made up of fantastical and funny adventure books with some subtle life lessons sprinkled in along the way. Slater fluently shares stories of the monsters that walk among us—bringing Bigfoot and Aliens to life—in ways that will convince the most skeptical readers. With twists and turns around every corner, readers will be flipping the pages as fast as they can to see what happens next.

The Mattigan kids don't believe in things that go bump in the night. After all, their dad is famous for proving such things are impossible. But, when their long-lost Grandpa Joe shows up with his Mysterious Monsters journal, begging for help, the siblings find themselves drawn into a search for Bigfoot.

Along the way, they'll have to deal with meddling babysitters, suspicious psychics, a YouTube disaster, and their furious father. To solve this mystery, Maddie, Max, and Theo must rethink what's possible ― and make lots of peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

The book starts off by introducing us to the Mattigan Family who live in Portland, Oregon. In an old mansion perfect for the game Hide-and-Go-Seek.

The Mattigan family members include:
  • Father Marcus, who is a professional sceptic and star of “Monstrous Lies with Marcus Mattigan”.  Dad appears to love teachable moments and has a case of Dad Humor.
  • Mother: She vanished two years ago.
  • Maddie is 12 years old and loves to be in charge with all her eyeballing and lectures. She seems to really have taken the mother role when trying to keep her brothers in line.
  • Max is the 10 year old who is all about using his “spy-nocular” and crouching.  He loves maps, old books and garage sales, which is something my own son loves.
  • Theo is the youngest at 8 years old. He loves to watch Hansel and Gretel and doesn’t go anywhere without his sack of peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches.

While the father is out of town for work in West Virginia trying to debunk the legend of the Mothman, the Mattigan kids have an unexpected guest. (We only live 45 minutes from the Mothman museum!) Maddie, Max and Theo are getting to know their babysitter Betsy, when Grandpa Joe arrives. This is their first time meeting him. Grandpa Jo left their dad when he was very young and is looking to make up for lost time by showing his son Marcus that monsters do exist, if he can prove it. Grandpa Joe brings his Mysterious Monster journal with him to show the kids. The Mattigan kids believe their dad that monsters are not real, however, Grandpa Joe is able to convince the kids that Bigfoot might be real.

It does not take long before the kids are in the woods finding proof of Bigfoot. However, the next day they find that Grandpa Jo is a fraud and out to hurt their dad’s reputation. While waiting for their dad to come home from West Virginia they have another surprise guest. You will have to read the book to find out the rest.

This book offers plenty of humor, adventure and mystery around each corner. I love that each character is quirky in their own waylk something that my family can relate too. The Mattigan family has a number of personal catchphrases that you will enjoy. The writing style that David Michael Slater offers is something that my little boy really enjoyed.

With Bigfoot safely stashed in their basement, Maddie, Max, and Theo Mattigan are off to Las Vegas with their dad. His plan is to prove there are no aliens on the loose there.

But now that his kids know Mysterious Monsters are real, they're making plans of their own. They'll need clever disguises, a well-hidden walkie-talkie -- and more than a few broken eggs -- to find out once and for all what's hidden in the notorious Area 51.

The Mattigan family is here again to bring you a whole new adventure. Father Marcus and his three children Maddie, Max and Theo are on their way to stay in Vegas. The City of Lights is the best place to be right now in hopes of fixing their dad’s reputation. J-Rod an Alien working with the government has escaped from Area 51. Their dad wants to prove that J-Rod is a fraud, simply a made up story. The kids let their dad believe they love his plan however they have a plan of their own in hopes of finding out J-Rod is real.

Throughout the book the kids put their spying and investigating skills to the test. What they find at the end of the book will bring a whole new adventure for the Maddigan Kids. The book offers plenty of dad humor, adventure and mystery around each corner. There are several personal catchphrases throughout this book, like the first book.

Where to purchase: You can purchase both book from Amazon. Bigfoot Mysterious Monsters $6.21 and Alien Mysterious Monsters $6.18. Kindle downloads for both books are $4.99.
