The Do-Deca-Pentathlon Review

Sunday, December 2, 2012

Two grown men take sibling rivalry to new heights of hilarity in this winning comedy with heart. All bets are off during a family reunion when estranged brothers Mark (Steve Zissis) and Jeremy (Mark Kelly) secretly resurrect a decades-old quest to be the best. Determined to complete 25 outrageous events in order to crown a true champion, the exhausted pair find themselves leg wrestling, ping-ponging, and laser tagging to the finish line...while learning a few life lessons along the way. Written and directed by the comically competitive Duplass Brothers (Cyrus), The Do-Deca-Pentathlon brings home the gold — and the laughs!

Most movies that you the twentieth century fox logo on their front, are released and immediately promoted by means of a large budgeting campaign, that showers the film in a popular song and creates commercial advertisements out of (mostly) some of the best scenes. However, every once in a while, it does not take a gargantuan budget and equally expensive marketing campaign for a movie to tell its story, and deliver its point.

The Do-Deca-Pentathlon follows the trail of 2 brothers. They are competitive, you know, “sibling rivalry. They once competed against each other in a “dodeca”, which they describe as a 25 game “personal Olympics”, each brother basically tries their hardest to be the better athlete in any “event”.

This movie is simple, funny, pleasantly elegant, and above all entertaining. The actors seemed very involved in the personalities of the film. You could do a lot worse, and laugh a lot less, if you pass this movie by because it’s not blockbuster enough for you.

The most attractive element is added to the film in the form of subtlety. The brothers really care for each other deep down, and that seem to shine through the antics. These guys won’t be making the cover of many beauty magazines in the near future, this adds a little more subtlety to the movie’s style of doing an entertain take on an event that could actually happen. I recommend this movie because it feels complete, and satisfies any evening with a good-mood setting show.
