AQUAMARINE Blu-ray Review

Monday, April 9, 2012

Just in time for Easter, this fun feature starring Emma Roberts (Scream 4 and Valentine’s Day), Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left and Malcolm in the Middle), and Joanna “Jojo” Levesque (Hawaii Five-O) is the perfect movie for any family to enjoy. It's the end of summer and Claire (Roberts) and Hailey (JoJo) have a major problem. In just five days, Hailey's family is moving halfway around the world! These girls need a major miracle, and they get one in the form of Aquamarine, a beautiful mermaid who washes ashore in a late summer storm. Sweet but clueless to the ways of romance, she offers to grant the girls one wish if they help her find the boy of her dreams. But when they attempt to reel in the cute local lifeguard, the result is something none of them expect and they discover that sometimes what you wish for isn't what you really want after all!

My little girl loves fantasy characters. She loves everything from unicorns to dragons, fairies to talking animals. That said, she also loves to watch movies. So when I found out that I was getting the chance to do a review of the film “Aquamarine”, I knew that she would be especially excited to help me out.

The movie arrived, I hyped my little girl up a bit, and we popped it in. The first thing about the movie that I want to make clear from the beginning is that this is a girl’s movie. Everything from the characters, situations, and plot screams girlie. I have a little boy; he stared at the screen for a few minutes and then went to his room. My daughter is into exactly this kind of thing and became “hooked” right away.

Two teenage girls have a seemingly hopeless crush on a lifeguard in their beach resort area. “Seemingly hopeless” dreams can come true though, if you have a little magic on your side. Things take a wonderfully unexpected turn when the girls meet a mermaid who offers to grant a wish for them if they help her.

This movie was enjoyable, and I enjoyed spending time with my daughter as we watched it together. It is good “girlie fun” and something that your daughter will appreciate. There have been other mermaid movies in the past, but this one is a departure from the traditional mold. Don’t end up like a fish out of water, check out Aquamarine, and catch up on the latest Mermaid adventure.
