Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked Blu-ray Review

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Everyone’s favorite chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, and their female companions, The Chipettes, have the time of their lives during a family vacation they’ll never forget in ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED, debuting on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on March 27 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The hilarious live-action comedy will also be available as an exciting “Island Adventure” edition on Blu-ray and 2-Disc DVD, filled with tons of fun for the whole family to enjoy just in time for Easter.

The Chipmunks, Chipettes and their caretaker Dave Seville (Jason Lee; “My Name is Earl”) embark on a trip of a lifetime aboard the Carnival Dream cruise ship. Seeking fun and excitement, the Chipmunks turn the luxury cruise liner into their own personal playground. But the ultimate vacation quickly becomes a disaster when the Chipmunks, Dave and Carnival cruise pelican mascot, who turns out to be the chipmunks’ old manager, Ian Hawke (David Cross; Megamind), accidentally fall overboard and find themselves ‘chipwrecked’ on a remote island. Stuck in an unfamiliar territory, the six furry castaways are separated from Dave and must figure out a way to survive on their own for the first time in their lives.

Showcasing a variety of popular songs from Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” fans can get munked with the Munk Music & Dance Machine special feature on the ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED Blu-ray and DVD.

Alvin and the Chipmunks “Chipwrecked” is the latest installment of the modern Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. It continues the tradition of high-flying antics and song and dance. The newest movie starts on a cruise line and a quick turn of events lands our chipmunks on a tropical island.
I have been a long-time fan of Alvin and the Chipmunks. My kids naturally love it to, thanks to new movies breathing life into the old franchise. So it goes without saying that I was grateful for the opportunity to review the latest installment in the popular series. My kids were excited to see it, and we put it in the blue-ray in the PS3 as soon as it was opened.

This movie is fundamentally the same “chipmunk” style of movie, but also does a few things differently to mix it up. People love change, right? The movie features the return of the “Chipettes” which I thought was great. I think it helps little girls enjoy the movie a little more and, quite frankly, the movie wouldn’t have seemed right without them. The two chipmunk squads aren’t really rivals this time around (well, at least not for long) and they really find a way to bond with each other.

So how exactly does the movie “mix things up”, you might ask? Well, Alvin, who is known as the most rambunctious of the group, actually takes a sort of protective and responsible stand when they find themselves stranded. Simon, usually the most level headed, becomes the irresponsible one (thanks to the effects of a spider bite) and Theodore, well, Theodore is still Theodore, but he does take more risks than usual. This is mostly influenced by Simon (who refers to himself as Simone) coming out of his shell.

The movie, like the rest, is plenty entertaining for the whole family. There is nothing “too childish” to keep the adults away, while nothing is “too racy” for young children in the audience. Some of the scenes are HILARIOUS, especially early on, and as wev’e come to expect, there is no shortage of choreographed singing. It is a great family movie from a time-honored series that absolutely defines “appropriate for all ages.”
