Holiday Gift Guide 2011: SolPals Review/Giveaway

My kids love to sleep with some sort of light on. They have slept with lava lamps, their TV on, and also you cant forget those nightlights that plug into the outlet. I have been OK with everything except the nightlight plug, which really scares me. Sometimes it can tend to get really hot which makes me wonder if it could catch on fire. Of course, my kids won't sleep with out some sort of light, so I am always in the need looking for some sort of night light. SolPals offered to see me a solar powered children's nightlight that offers what I am looking for in a safe nightlight.

About the company: Sol Pals began in 2008 as the brainchild of founders/inventors Ron and Chantele Gustaveson. The couple was inspired by a documentary about children of impoverished inner-city families, living in darkness because they couldn't afford electricity. Having four children tehmselves, their hearts went out to these kids who came home to the dark, day after day. They knew there had to be a way to help. From a passion for solar and wind energy, SolPals was born. The intent was to combine two concepts: solar power and nightlights. The result was two unique lights:
MoonBeams…solar-powered hybrid nightlights for children
FlexLight…solar-powered hybrid utility light
My little girl was so excited when she came home from school and saw a very pretty flower in her window. Later that night, it doubles as a pretty blue light, illuminating her whole room when she went to bed, which she couldn't wait to do.

I was very surprised with the size of the SolPals. It isn't little in any way and at nightime it really offers quite a bit of light in her room. It is also a really nice piece of decor. The suction cup attached to the window with no problems and didn't slide or detach. I did however have to add in two regualr AA batteries.

At nighttime, the light automatically came on and lasted all night long. I loved the blue light because it lends a very soothing touch to the room. I can't wait until they add some boy SolPals, I know my little boy wouldn't want one with a flower or star. Maybe a football or a car.

HYBRID CONCEPT: Through much research and development, SolPals has invented a light that uses both a RECHARGABLE battery and two backup, alkaline batteries. The reason for multiple battery types is to insure adequate power. Solar power only works with adequate SUNLIGHT. The longer the solar cells are exposed to daylight, the longer the charge. Conversely, less daylight means less charge. All SolPals lights have the option to be either completely solar-powered or to use built-in hybrid technology. The hybrid sensor first utilizes all stored solar energy, then, if necessary, automatically switches to the backup alkaline batteries.
CHARITY: Ron and Chantele wanted a product that would be fun, functional and educational for kids. They also wanted a company that could facilitate the idea of "kids helping kids." How best to do this? SolPals contributes a portion of proceeds to a charitable foundation, Project Share the Light. Project Share the Light focuses on solar lighting solutions for children in impoverished areas around the world, because NO child should be left in the dark.

Where to purchase: You can order from the SolPals website. You are also able to make a purchase on Amazon.
