Holiday Gift Guide 2011: Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Review

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a battle unlike any other when RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES makes its worldwide debut on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on December 13th in North America and starting December 7th Internationally.  From the Oscar-winning® visual effects team that brought to life the worlds of Avatar and Lord of the Rings comes revolutionary new ground - a CGI ape that delivers a dramatic performance of unprecedented emotion and intelligence, and epic battles on which rest the upended destinies of man and primate.

James Franco (127 Hours) stars as Will Rodman, a neuroscientist living in San Francisco trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s disease by testing on chimpanzees, giving them a human level of intelligence.  After a test subject’s baby, Caesar, is orphaned, Will decides to raise him at home on his own with his Alzheimer-stricken father (John Lithgow; “Dexter”).  What begins simply as a continuation of his experiment quickly turns into a problem for Will, as Caesar is taken away from him and forced to live in a primate facility.  As Caesar’s intelligence continues to grow, he begins to stake his claim as the leader of his new primate counterparts, which will ultimately lead to the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Every once in a while, a movie will debut and be considered an instant classic. When this happens, I give more credit to the director, the actors, the music, and camera work, than the actual story. Well, this just so happens to be one of those movies and, though it didnt nessecarily do anything that hasnt been done by movies before, the production quality stands out, and assures that this will be remembered as one of the best films of 2011.

The story is tragic, exciting, and inspiring. Much of the movie felt like a drama, it is filled to the rim with emotion and moments that will move you. The way that ceaser (Starring chimp) interacts, his expressions as he identifies another evil of man or another obstacle to overcome, you will route for that chimp as you watch his story unfold. It isn't a bad way to spend a couple of hours. The ending is as satisfying as the climax of the story, the whole movie is built around both, as it should be. I was left with no unanswered questions as the credits rolled.

As I mentioned before, the real jewel of this movie is the production quality. No expense was sparred in the detail of the computer-digitized scenes. They are frequent and in your face. You'll be amazed at ceaser and all of the ape's detail as they climb, wing, and communicate with each other. These are some of the best computer generated images on a screen anywhere.

I've been looking foward to this movie, and I can say with confidence, it was worth the wait. I can't find any real issue to fault the movie on. The only character that seemingly lacked purpose was will's(James Franco/ lead character) girlfriend, though there were two scenes where I guess she did help out.

The Bottom line is this; If you haven't seen this movie, you really should. It is an exceptional film where acting, producing, Symphony, story, and CG images all meet and work together in theatrical harmony.

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), this special effects blockbuster features fantastic supporting performances from Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Brian Cox (Red), Tom Felton (Harry Potter films) and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) in a ground-breaking performance.  The RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Blu-ray is loaded with bonus material including deleted scenes, making-of featurettes commentaries and more.
